UltraSurf  8 User’s Guide

Developed by a group of top scientists and engineers in computer and network with their creativity and expertise accumulated over many years at UltraReach, the latest release of UltraSurf 8 is a major technical breakthrough that has overcome the deficiencies of many previous generations of proxy techniques, including early versions of UltraReach Products. UltraSurf 8 is launched directly after UltraSur 6; it brings the proxy techniques in breaking through internet blockage to a new level.

As the security and easy to use are our first priority, the most prominent features of UltraSurf 8 are: it has implemented a complex proxy with complete transparency and high level of encryption on Microsoft Internet Explorer (IE) platform. UltraSurf 8 enables users to browse any website freely just as same as using regular IE browser while it automatically searches the highly speed proxy servers. Under UltraSurf 8 environment, all the contents being transferred are highly encrypted; the level of encryption exceeds the secure standard set for financial transaction such as online banking.

When UltraSurf 8 is started, all IE based browsing is being protected under the ultra high level encryption provided by UltraSurf. The so-called great-firewall which applied by the censors virtually disappeared instantaneously; gone are the unpopular, unpleasant “walls of internet blockage” which the authorities put incredible amount of manpower and financial resource to build up. It appears to the users that the great firewalls becomes transparent and thus enables users freedom to surf any websites in the world.

We would like to remind our users that

  1. Due to the fact our brand name UltraSurf 7 had been plagiarized by malicious people, we have decided to directly release UltraSurf 8 to avoid confusions.
  2. In response to many users’ feedback, we have removed the golden lock icon which used to appear on the lower right corner on screen. As long as UltraSurf 8 is running, all IE based browsing is protected under the ultra high level encryption provided by UltraSurf.
  3. The current homepage of wujie.net is very concise, with a few relevant links and a search entry box. When you search through UltraSurf, you will get a complete search result which has not been filtered by the Great Firewall. You may click on any of the search results which will take you to the main page of that link. We will gradually add other related contents onto our home page in the future.

UltraSurf 8 implements almost all browser functions based on HTTP a user needs, such as browsing websites, login and posting on web forums, using Webmail, uploading and downloading data files, real time audio, video and other multimedia programs, etc. Please refer to “Functional Specification of UltraSurf 8” below for detailed information.

When UltraSurf 8 is started, the IE browser will open the home page of UltraReach web portal. A user can also open IE to browse any website. As long as UltraSurf 8 is opened, the newly opened IE browsers are under the UltraSurf protection with high encryption, even though the website may not be the content from UltraReach homepage. User can simply click “Exit” on the UltraSurf8’s interface to end the UltraSurf program, then IE browser is no longer under UltraSurf protection at this point.

Again, we do want to remind UltraSurf users that after you exit UltraSurf8, your IE browse activities are no longer under the protection of UltraSurf. Please do not browse any censored sites at this point, or you may run into the danger of being detected by the network monitor software applied by Internet police.

Currently UltraSurf 8 only supports Microsoft IE and several other Microsoft based browsers. It does not support the browsers such as Netscape, Mozilla, Opera, etc. However, if users are able to set proxy address manually in those browsers to 127.0.0.1:9666, or enter the setting according to the portal number shown on the user interface, they will be able to surf Internet with those browsers under the protection of UltraSurf.

I. UltraSurf 8 Installation and Usage

1. Download and Install UltraSurf 8

It is very easy to download and install UltraSurf 8 as it is instructed.

UltraSurf 8 is a piece of green software. The installation of UltraSurf 8 does not alter any setting of your computer system. If you have downloaded the executable file (*.exe), virtually you don’t need to install it. You can start the program simply by double-clicking the executable file.  If you have downloaded the zipped file (*.zip), you should be able to extract the executable with Winzip. Then you can start the program by double-clicking the extracted file.

UltraSurf 8 software is less than 90K. Users may save it in a flash drive or save it in an email box. You may use it on any computer, without leaving any trace on that computer.

The photo icon of UltraSurf 8 is a sailing boat navigating around the globe. We may change the file name of the .exe file. Users may also change the file name for their own safety and convenience.

2. Start UltraSurf and Set UltraSurf 8 Interface

After you double click the executable file, UltraSurf 8 will open the UltraSurf 8 Interface window. The interface will have the function keys of UltraSurf and the operation status, which means all information shown on the IE browser is now under the protection of UltraSurf 8. If UltraSurf 8 prompts a window for proxy setup, please refer to step 8 for proxy configuration. If UltraSurf 8 does not open the home page, please refer to step 7 on advanced settings.

3. Server Connection and Operation Status Display

UltraSurf 8 Interface displays the status of server connection and operation. When start, UltraSurf automatically searches and chooses the highest speed server available. The green dot, when lit, means the corresponding server is running; when dim, means the corresponding server can be used as backup. Connection speed is an indicator of the performance of the server; 100% is the highest speed and is equivalent to direct connection. The user can also choose preferred servers.

4. How to Use UltraSurf Program

A user is able to browse any website from the IE for the homepage or open a new window of IE to browse. For example, if the user wants to browse the Secret China news web site, simply enter the URL http://www.secretchina.com directly in the small URL window of the IE, UltraSurf will bring up the web site immediately.

Note: You may minimize the interface window when using UltraSurf. You may not close the window, or you exit the UltraSurf8.

5. Exit UltraSurf Program

You can click “Exit” key on the UltraSurf interface to exit the program after you finish using the program. The IE browser windows you have opened and will open are no longer under protection of UltraSurf after you exit the program. For your safety, during the 20 seconds count-down before the exit, an “Exit Warning” will be prompted with the following options:

·         Close IE and exit.

This option allows you close all current browser windows when you exit UltraSurf. It’s recommended that you choose this option, because it’s very likely that the browser windows have URLs of some censored websites you browsed using UltraSurf. In case you happen to click a link in a censored site by mistake without running UltraSurf, you maybe trigger the Internet police.

·         Keep IE and exit.

If you have a special need to keep current IE browser windows open, and you are aware of the safety issues, you can select this option, which make UltraSurf not close any browser windows current open during the exiting process. We suggest you then close all windows with censored websites after you exit the UltraSurf program if you select this option.

6. Function Keys on UltraSurf 8 Interface

The UltraSurf 8 Interface is shown on the desktop during the whole process when UltraSurf 8 is running. A user may minimize the interface. The following is the instruction for all function keys:

·         “Home”: Usually the UltraReach homepage will open automatically when UltraSurf 8 is started. If the UltraReach homepage is closed, you may click this function key to reopen the homepage.

·         “Retry”: If you find the current set of servers is too slow, you may click this key to restart your search for a new set of servers.

·         “Option”: Advanced setting provides an advanced user with options to clear browsing history and set proxy. Average users can use the default UltraSurf setting and don’t need to set these options. Please refer to Step 7 for “advanced setting”.

·         “Help”: This function key, when clicked, will prompt a user guide on the IE browser.

·         “Exit”:  UltraSurf operation will be stopped when the “Exit” key is clicked. UltraSurf will clear the browsing history, restore default setting and perform a series of other tasks before quitting the program. Please refer to Step 5 “Exit UltraSurf Program”. A user may also click the “X” key on the upper right corner of the UltraSurf interface to stop the program.

7. Advance Setting

The default setting of UltraSurf is intended to protect the users’ safety. Users with special needs may alter these settings to specify whether they want to clear the browsing history, to delete Cookie and to use proxy other than UltraSurf. The following are detailed instructions for the options in “advanced setting”.

 8. Manual Proxy Setting

Average users do not need to enter proxy setting themselves. The default setting of UltraSurf will choose the proxy setting based on the setting of IE proxy server of your computer. When start UltraSurf 8, it will automatically check the proxy server setting of the IE. If the user has set the proxy server on IE and has not checked “skip this setting on start” the proxy setting window will be prompted. If you click “Proxy Setting” function key, the proxy setting window will also be prompted.

When UltraSurf is running, the user is using the UltraSurf proxy which provides complete transparency and high level encryption. User’s identity and security are under protection of UltraSurf. If the user manually enters proxy setting, it is in fact dual proxy. The user will be under dual encryption, but the speed will be hurt. Users with special need may enter proxy setting based on his specific circumstances. The following is the instruction for proxy setting:

Click “OK” to confirm the settings you have manually entered;

Click “Cancel” to cancel the settings you have manually entered.

II. Functional Specification of UltraSurf 8

(1)   Real Time, 100% Transparent Proxy

Due to the limitation of previous technology, many proxy products, including earlier products from UltraReach have the following deficiencies:

·         Unable to provide real time content. Users often see outdated websites.

·         Unable to maintain complete information from the original website. Some contents, which are dynamically generated with relatively latest technologies such as JavaScript, DHTML, are dropped.

·         The number of proxy servers is very limited, which results in other limitations such as low speed, small capacity and being unstable.

·         Data transmission is not encrypted or not encrypted to the desired level.

With UltraReach’s innovative architectural design, UltraSurf 8 has overcome the above shortcomings and established a complete set of proxy platform which makes best use of all available proxy servers in the world, allowing a great number of users to obtain real time, complete content from websites.

(2)   Ultra High Encryption, Better Security

Starting from the release of UltraScape 3.0, UltraReach has adopted the most advanced encryption technology in its products to ensure the security of data transmission. The encryption level is much higher than the industrial standard encryption “https”, which is used for financial data transfer such as online banking etc. UltraSurf 8 has further enhanced network security on the basis of current advanced encryption.

       (3) Supporting HTTPS Tunneling

UltraSurf 8 supports https tunneling. Users can visit “https” websites through UltraSurf 8. Because contents in “https” websites are encrypted already, data from these websites will be double protected through UltraSurf 8.

 (4) Supporting All HTTP Based Information Transmission Systems.

UltraSurf 8 supports all http based information transfer systems, such as web email system. Specifically all emails sent through UltraSurf 8 are highly encrypted. As for some non-http-based data transmission such as real time data streaming, it is planned to provide secure transmission with UltraSurf in the future.

        (5) Supporting Secure Data Uploading and Downloading

UltraSurf 8 supports secure data file downloading as well as uploading. All other proxy products on the market do not support data uploading. Now users can upload text files, images, audio/video and any other type of data through UltraSurf 8. The data, of course, are being highly encrypted with the advanced encryption technique.
